It is important to prepare.
The preparation includes some questions to answer:
What budget do you have?
Which voice should read the book?
What style should the audiobook have?
If you plan to read the book yourself, ask someone in your area about what they think about your voice and hope for an honest answer. There are voices that are more or less easy to listen to, depending on tone and character. If you have written the book in I-form, as I mentioned before, the credibility of it is yourself who is reading.
Here are a variety of variations that depend on the book’s content. If there are many quotes or dialogues in which characters from the book talk, it becomes natural to think about how they should be embodied and to a certain extent to dramatize the reading voice. There is also the opportunity to increase the dramatization in the audiobook with sound illustrations and environmental sound. It may also be that the book is written in such a way that a simple and straightforward reading without reinforcements is the very best. If it is a fact book, the style is very important, which we already talked about in the section on the reading Yes, it is important to think out the style.
Then you will also determine the cover image and descriptive text for the audiobook, so that you have it ready from the beginning, as it will be the cover image and the descriptive text that creates the customer’s expectation. You should satisfy this expectation with your audiobook.
After loading, editing begins. Here you should remove all misreads, readings, cough attacks, sneezing and other irrelevant sounds. You will also notice if the reader has any special sounds, such as cool inhalations, readings, wheezing, wheezing, etc. Already when you start editing, you must decide whether to remove, for example, all inhalations or which they should be a natural part of the soundscape.
You may also find that the sound level varies, which may have different causes depending on how accurate the recording was. My tip is to wait with the sound level adjustments until after the review listening, so you can take a total grip on what is to be adjusted and see the whole.
In addition to reading the book’s own content, the editing also includes the formal audio elements such as the presentation of the book and the author. Even at the end of the book, a neat ending should be read. In the case of a fact book, e.g. chapter headings and other guiding elements are also loaded.
Just as one reads a written book, an audio book review must be listened to not only detect any errors in the read material, but also to listen to how well the style works when the whole audio book is to be consumed. It is important to get a feel for how listenable the audiobook is, if there is something in the soundscape that may irritate the ear. It may be that the sound level varies, which is addressed in the adjustment. It may also be that the voice is uneven, which is much more difficult to correct afterwards and usually means that parts have to be read again.
There should be several people who listen to proofs. Here, just as with eyes, several ears are more than just your two ears. The reader should listen for proof in his / her own voice. Likewise, the producer of the audiobook should listen. It is often only in the review listening that they are already involved for the first time to experience the entirety of the audiobook and get an idea of how well the production is connected.
Make a note of the errors you discover and indicate approximately the minute and second where the error occurs. Then it becomes easier to adjust and the editor doesn’t have to look for long.
Then compile all notes from all proof listeners and create a basis for adjustment. You will then see points that everyone wants to adjust as well as get some comments that are unique to each reviewer. During the review listening, it may also have emerged that the tempo is too high or too low. You may need to adjust to create more quiet parts for reflection or you may need to remove a lot of silence to increase the pace and tempo. Once you have changed all your views and errors, the audiobook is ready to be put on the market. Don’t forget that the whole world is your market.
